What GS1 Digital Link is

A GS1 standard for writing product identifiers as a web address. The GTIN, and optionally the batch, serial number and dates, sit in the path and query of a normal https link. A phone camera opens it like any link, and a GS1-aware scanner at the till reads the same GTIN it would get from the EAN or UPC barcode.

The resolver decides where a scan goes. id.gs1.org sends it to the links the brand owner has registered with GS1. On your own domain, you run that redirect yourself.

The 2027 “sunrise”

GS1 has set a goal, known as Sunrise 2027, for retail point-of-sale scanners to read 2D barcodes such as a QR code carrying GS1 Digital Link, alongside EAN and UPC. It is a readiness target, not a date when linear barcodes stop working, and many products will carry both for years.

Timelines and rules vary by country and retailer, so check your GS1 member organization’s current guidance and your retailers’ requirements before you change packaging. The GTIN must be one licensed to your brand.

1

Enter the product’s GTIN and, if you use them, the batch or lot, serial number and dates.

2

The GS1 Digital Link URI is built and checked as you type, on id.gs1.org or your brand’s own domain.

3

Download the QR code as PNG, SVG or PDF. The link and the code are made in your browser.

Questions

What is a GS1 Digital Link?+

A GS1 standard that writes a product’s GTIN, and optionally its batch, serial number and dates, as a web address. Phones open it like any link, and GS1-aware scanners at checkout read the GTIN from it.

What is Sunrise 2027?+

GS1’s goal for retail point-of-sale scanners to read 2D barcodes, such as QR codes carrying GS1 Digital Link, as well as EAN and UPC. It is a readiness target, not a date when linear barcodes stop working. Check your GS1 member organization’s current guidance and your retailers’ requirements.

Should I use id.gs1.org or my own domain?+

id.gs1.org is GS1’s global resolver and sends scans to the links the brand owner registers with GS1. Your own domain gives you full control of where scans go, but your server must answer GS1 Digital Link paths such as /01/ followed by the GTIN.

Why is my GTIN padded to 14 digits?+

GS1 Digital Link always uses the 14-digit form after /01/. A GTIN-8, -12 or -13 gets leading zeros, which do not change the number, so 614141000036 becomes 00614141000036.

Can I drop the EAN or UPC barcode once I have this QR code?+

Not yet for most retailers. During the transition, packs usually carry both. Ask your retailers and your GS1 member organization before removing a linear barcode.
